Donele Wilkins Appointed to the White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council
The WHEJAC, a federal advisory committee, was established by President Biden under Executive Order 14008 of January 27, 2021, to tackle the climate crisis here and around the world. The council provides independent advice and recommendations to the chair of the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) and the White House Environmental Justice Interagency Council (IAC) on critical issues including pollution reduction, climate change michigan, and equitable conservation.

For more than three decades, Wilkins has led local movements for environmental justice, including advocating for cleaner air and launching Detroit’s first green jobs training program. Wilkins brings experience in community-based organizing, planning, and workforce development to the Council. Her leadership at the Green Door Initiative has empowered numerous communities by providing resources, training, and support to combat environmental challenges.
As she joins the ranks of national advisors, her appointment is a testament to her lifelong deduction to creating a healthier and more equitable environment for all.
"I'm excited to have the opportunity to take everything I've learned here- growing up in Detroit, to advise this administration on their next leg of work that will advance the environmental justice work happening in communities like mine, and all across the country," said Wilkins.
The WHEJAC comprises approximately 40 members selected for their expertise in environmental justice, climate change, and related fields. The Council meets quarterly to discuss and provide guidance on a range of issues, including toxics and pollution reduction, clean energy transition, and public health.
